1997

AMBITIOUS plans to bring a three-tier £1.5 million nightclub to Westfield were being considered by planners. Applicant Stewart Darar from Abronhill said that the club would fill a gap in the market for over 25 seeking an upmarket night out. However, locals were already filing objections on grounds of noise.

1987

ARMY lads Mark Brownlie from Abronhill and Joe McLoughlin from Kildrum were all set to fly back to Cumbernauld after a four month posting on the Falkland Islands. Both were privates with the 1st Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. Their work had consisted of long foot patrols between lonely sheep farming settlements, guarding RAF radar stations sleeping in tents and reading copies of Cumbernauld News kindly sent out by relatives!

1977

A FILM about Cumbernauld was set for an April premiere. Starring Fenella Fielding, the mini-movie was seen as a new means of promoting the town, and was viewed as a more up-to-date equivalent to the 1960s film Cumbernauld: Town For Tomorrow. Cumbernauld Development Corporation had paid for the making of the film - but would not be drawn on how much it had cost!

1972

CUMBERNAULD racing driver Graham Birrell had just returned from a rally to Monte Carlo. Graham, who lived in the town centre penthouses, had clocked up 2500 miles with co-driver Kieron Wood at an average speed of 55 miles per hour - towing a caravan all the way to the Med!
