Take a stroll Down Memory Lane

Sixties scene: It might not be on a par with the glamorous harbourside at Monte Carlo (See Page 3 of this week’s Gazette) but Carluke High Street remains one of the most intact, handsome Victorian shopp​ing centres in Lanarkshire. Here it is pictured in its pre-pedestrianisation heyday in 1965 when folk, like these young girls, had to look both ways before crossing! Traffic was largely banished from the street in the early 70s.

50 YEARS AGO

n A Lanark man pleaded guilty at the Burgh Police Court to being drunk and disorderly in the town’s High Street. He was fined 20s with the alternative of 10 days’ imprisonment.

n Electors were invited to attend an address by JA Murray Macdonald to his Lanark constituents in the YMCA Hall.

n Braidwood tomato growers Daniel and John Forrest won respective first and second prizes in the open class for tomatoes at Motherwell Flower Show.

n Two men pleaded guilty at Lanark Sheriff Court to having stolen a watch from the car belonging to auctioneer William Elliot, of Muirglen, Lanark, on September 14 near Sandyburn Road. The men were each imprisoned for 20 days.

n Mr and Mrs JD Muir held the opening dances of their popular and refined sessions of the new season in Carluke Town Hall.

n Carluke Hearts boys thrashed Uddingston United 7-2 in the Lanarkshire Juvenile League with goals by Thomson, Cranston (3) and Gilchrist (3).

100 YEARS AGO

n Postman J Train, who had been employed at Carluke Post Office since January 1951, left to work with the Inland Revenue at Chelmsford. Colleagues presented him with a pen and pencil set.

n Elizabeth Watson, of 118 Stewart Street, Carluke, was awarded the Best Nurse of the Year gold medal at Strathclyde Hospital.

n An anonymous £100 donation was given to William J Walker, Burgh Chamberlain, towards the capital cost of the indoor swimming pool at Lanark.

n A Dundee man was jailed for six months at Lanark Sheriff Court after being found guilty of rendering worthless cheques to a housewife in Wilsontown and the proprietrix of Shieldhill Hotel, Quothquan, where he obtained board and lodgings by fraud.

n Forth Wanderers’ 16-year-old goalie Iain Moffat was cheered off the park by Shotts fans, despite Forth having just lost 12-0 away from home in the Lanarkshire League. One of many great saves he made was stopping a thunderbolt Keenan penalty.
