Old stomping ground

Front-row forwards at the club are set to benefit from the wisdom of Scotland international Jon Welsh next season.

“His expertise in forward play and the set piece will add another dimension to our coaching team,” said club president Rangi Jericevich.

“Jon will also be a fantastic role model and example to our young players as someone who previously played for the club and, by working hard, was able to progress into the professional game.

“He understands what it takes to make it as a pro player and that experience will be invaluable as we try to create an environment at GHA that encourages and supports young players who wish to follow in his footsteps.”

Welsh (27) joined Warriors from GHA in 2008 and is closing in on 100 caps for the club as well as having been capped twice for Scotland.

The forward, who also played for Whitecraigs, completed his UKCC Level 2 coaching qualification earlier this year.

He will be taking up the role at GHA on a voluntary basis outside of his Warriors commitments.

Welsh joins the youthful new GHA coaching set-up headed up by Craig Sorbie, a 29-year-olf former stand-off at the club who was forced to call time on his career following a shoulder injury.

He is being assisted by player/coach Peter Jericevich who has returned to the club from Ayr.

Senior forward Donald Malcolm and Andrew Henderson the former Warrior and Scotland International who is also the club captain, will also add their experience to the coaching team.

Meanwhile, the club will look for a strong finish to the Legacy sevens series on Saturday.

At Saturday’s Hamilton 7s, the Braidholm boys fell to the hosts at the semi-final stage, after defeating Dalziel and Glasgow Hawks.

With 22 points, the Braidholm side currently sit in fourth place in the series standings, ahead of Cartha, who will host Saturday’s Glasgow city sevens.

In the first round of the cup, which is run in a knockout format, GHA face Perthshire, Cartha play Boroughmuir while Whitecraigs face Hamilton.

Ayr, Glasgow Warriors, Glasgow Hawks and series leaders Howe of Fife will also feature in the competition.

The tournament kicks off with Glasgow university taking on Ulster on pitch 1 at 1pm, Tickets are still available.

Meanwhile, a rugby side from Eastwood High have led a string of sporting successes for the school.

The senior rugby sevens team (pictured) are the proud holders of the Duncanrig 7s plate after coming back from 12-0 down with just minutes to go.

They beat Cathkin High School 14-12 to take the honours, with Stuart Murchie scoring the winning try.
