On-form striker sets new record

Between October and March, Flannery scored in eight successive matches, eclipsing the previous record of six, jointly held by three players, Archie Kemp, Alex Chatam and Paul Campbell.

Paddy’s goalfest started in November with a goal in a league win over Port Glasgow. A goal in each of the Scottish Junior Cup games against Darvel and Irvine Meadow was followed with a goal at Cambuslang in another league game.

A hat-trick in a friendly win over Pollok, then a goal in each of the two league wins over Thorniewood and Shettleston.

Finally, Paddy’s record was complete when he notched up a double in the Central League Cup win over Super League Premier side Lanark United.

A total of eleven goals in eight consecutive games.

Throughout his long career in senior and Junior football, Flannery has been a prolific scorer, netting 77 times whilst a senior player at Dumbarton.

After spells at various Junior clubs, he joined Kilsyth at the beginning of this season and has comfortably become the leading scorer so far this season.

As to the previous holders of the record, Archie Kemp scored fifteen times in an amazing six game run that included four hat-tricks in season 1949-50.

Alex Chatam had eight in his run in 1960 and Paul Campbell also scored eight times in his six games in season 2004-05.

Rather surprisingly, all time record scorer Alex Querrie was never to match this feat, although he did score in each of his first five games for the club at the start of the 1953-54 season and repeated it later in the same year.

John Gallacher had a five game scoring streak in season 1954-55 and quite a few others have had four game scoring runs.

The club record for goals in a game is held by a Mr Skelton who bagged six against Maryhill Harp way back in 1948.

Alex Querrie, of course, holds the all time club scoring record with 260 goals in his six years at Kilsyth.

He was top scorer in each of these seasons and holds the unique record of being all time top scorer in a single Scottish Junior Cup campaign with eighteen goals in 1954-55.

But then it is hardly necessary to remind the older Rangers fans of these facts.

Goals are much harder to come by in the modern game, and we are hardly likely ever to see these kind of scoring feats matched today.
