on the way to rio 2016

On Monday, East Ren’s own paralympic champion swimmer Andrew Mullen came off unscathed in the much-vaunted opening clash against Brazilian rival Daniel Diaz .

However, the tables were turned in the final when the Brazilian took gold.

Newton Mearns man Mullen led heat one of the 50m backstroke S5 to finish 37.29 seconds over Diaz’ 37.41 in the IPC World championship in Glasgow at Tollcross pool but he came second to Diaz in the final. The silver medal ensures a place in the Rio Olympics for Mullen next year but Brazilian Diaz will be competing on home ground and expecting that to give him the edge.
