Glasgow Tigers Ashfield Stadium is magnet for World speedway championship hopefuls

Three Americans, two Australians and riders from New Zealand, Denmark, France, Finland, Germany, Poland, Norway and Great Britain will be at the Peugeot Ashfield Stadium as Glasgow Tigers host one of four Grand Prix qualifiers being held across Europe.

Star names include 2012 world champion Chris Holder, former world under-21 champion Jaimon Lidsey, 2019 British champion Charles Wright, and Dan Bewley, who has been making a name for himself this season in the world’s richest league in Poland.

It is the second time Tigers have hosted the FIM event – and club director Peter Facenna says it is recognition of their standing in the sport.

He said: “Naturally a lot of focus is on the football, but the eyes of the speedway world will be on Glasgow this weekend – and that is testament to the work we’re doing here to promote speedway.

“It’s a world-class field and we now have one of the best racetracks in the country. Those two elements combined should make it another night to remember at Ashfield.

“We’ve already seen the kind of spectacular action our circuit can produce this season, but when you throw in some of the names in that line-up, it’s going to be really exciting.

“We also have our own Broc Nicol racing – albeit with an American flag on his chest – and hopefully the fans we’ll have in the stadium will get right behind him.

“The great thing is that we are once again able to offer this meeting on a live stream for anyone who can’t make it on the night. People from across the globe can watch their countrymen go into battle.

“But having fans inside the stadium is a massive boost for an event like this. I’m sure those who are lucky enough to have got their hands on tickets are in for a treat.”

The top four qualifiers from the meeting will go to the Grand Prix Challenge later this year, where the top three from that round will go into next year’s world championship series.
