It is named in honour of the legendary James B McAlpine, who played 500 games for Queen’s between 1919 and 1933 and scored 192 goals. The oldest football club in Scotland — and the oldest amateur club in the world — Queen’s beat Arbroath 6-1 at Hampden in the winter of 1923, when the same JB McAlpine scored a hat-trick — taking QP forward to become Division Two champions.
