Pupils banking on badminton success

CUMBERNAULD Primary has picked up December’s Bank of Scotland Badminton School of the Month Award, in recognition of their unfaltering support for Badminton Scotland’s grassroots initiative programme.

The award, presented by Lorrett McCutcheon and Valerie Pyott, customer managers at Bank of Scotland’s Cumbernauld branch, is just reward for the North Lanarkshire school which provides various opportunities for pupils to participate and develop their badminton skills.

With their participation at every carnival, sports hall challenge and school event, and as reigning badminton primary school champions for Lanarkshire, badminton is thriving at the school.

The school is taking part in an intensive after school badminton coaching programme in association with North Lanarkshire Leisure Trust. They also have a strong link with the Cumbernauld Junior Badminton Club, providing a pathway for enthusiastic players to further their development.

Thirty pupils have attended the junior awards scheme and are taking part in six badminton coaching sessions at Broadwood Leisure during school time in association with North Lanarkshire Leisure Trust.

The Bank of Scotland School of the Month Award has been introduced to recognise the commitment and achievements of primary and secondary schools that take part in grassroots badminton initiatives supported by Bank of Scotland. This year alone, over 10,000 young people from all over Scotland will benefit from programmes such as the Bank of Scotland Play Badminton Carnivals, Junior Shuttle Awards or Primary Sportshall Challenge. Each month, Badminton Scotland will nominate one school that has excelled in one of the nominated initiatives or perhaps even started a club of their own.

Lorrett McCutcheon said: “Congratulations to Cumbernauld Primary for scooping December’s Bank of Scotland School of the Month Award for badminton. Bank of Scotland and Badminton Scotland are committed to providing ways in which young people can play badminton, perhaps for the first time, and learn new skills.”

Mrs Allison Currie, deputy headteacher, added: “It’s fantastic for Cumbernauld Primary to be nominated as the December Bank of Scotland School of the Month. The kids love their badminton and the various initiatives and support on offer via Badminton Scotland give them the platform to continue playing on a regular basis, helping them to develop their badminton and social skills.”
