Queen's win

QUEEN'S Park took a step closer to the play offs after a convincing 3-0 win on Saturday against a beleaguered Montrose.

It was a largely scrappy opening to the encounter with both teams struggling to gain a foothold in the game.

But after 20 minutes Stephen McInally gave the hosts the perfect opportunity to take the lead after conceding a penalty for an apparent shove on Michael Daly.

Barry Douglas was given the responsibility and duly dispatched his eighth goal of the season. The Spiders' faithful didn't have long to wait before they saw their team double the advantage.

Ricky Little swung in a cross from the right and Martin McBride was there first to head past the ailing Andy McNeil.

It was probably more than the Queens warranted but the fans weren't going to complain.

Despite a sloppy start to the second half, the home side soon notched up their third with a fine goal.

Martin McBride picked up from a Guiseppe Capuano ball and he slipped it through to David Murray who then beautifully rounded the keeper and sidefooted home.

The Spiders were able to play out the game in a relaxed fashion, creating a couple of half chances.

Michael Daly and Barry Douglas both had efforts to make the scoreline more attractive but it wasn't to be.

The Queens' fans though were able to celebrate a vital win which sees them move five points clear of rivals Berwick.

Gardner Speirs was understandably jubilant. He declared: "We are delighted with the score as we knew it was going to be a hard game.

"But from start to finish I felt we controlled the game and I hope we can now push on and secure a play-off place".

Next home game for Queen's Park is a midweek evening affair and sees them taking on Albion Rovers on Tuesday April 20, kick off 7.30.
