It was Rabs who showed the early initiative with a first-minute Sawyers shot cleared for a corner. Minutes later Hunter’s 30-yard volley was smartly taken by home keeper Sommerville.

Rossvale hit back with Forsyth bringing out a low diving save from McKinven then in the 18th minute Vale grabbed the lead when they took advantage of hesitant defending – Collinge given space to bullet a Tulloch corner past McKinven.

Ten minutes later Rabs were back on level terms when Andreoni’s free-kick from fully 35 yards completely deceived Sommerville to land in the back of the net.

Rabs came close to snatching the lead with Andreoni heading a Watt cross inches over the bar.

At the other end McDonald blasted a free-kick well over the top from the edge of the Rabs penalty box. Three minutes from half-time Rob Roy went ahead when Rabs skipper Carter got on the end of a Team corner to knock the ball into the Rossvale net.

Rossvale equalised four minutes after the break when Scanlon’s deep cross from the left was headed home by Jarvie.

Play began to become untidy for spells as the ball skidded off the Petershill Park artificial surface at pace.

As the half wore on Rossvale looked the more likely to score with McKinven saving a Collinge header then tipping a Baikie free-kick past his post, however, the best chance of the half fell to Rabs’ Andreoni, who – when through on goal – gave the Vale keeper the chance to push his effort over the bar.

In the latter stages Rob Roy looked the stronger and went all out for the winner. Their trialist central defender, who gave a solid display throughout, connected with a McQuade corner, but sent his diving header over the bar.

Victory was finally secured for the Kirkintilloch side three minutes before the end after a clever move by substitutes Mitchell and Ferguson released McLeod in the home penalty box only for him to be pulled down, giving referee Pensom an easy decision – pointing to the spot.
