Rob Roy boss wary of Perthshire threat

The Rabs boss is aware that with a number of fancied side already out of the competition, and others going head to head in Saturday’s third round, his side have a real chance of a lengthy run in Scottish junior football’s ‘Blue Riband’ competition.

But first they have to negotiate Saturday’s match.

And while Rob Roy are strong favourites to progress, Maxwell will give Perthshire - currently top of the Central Second Division - every respect.

He said: “They are top of their league and scoring freely and it doesn’t matter if they are three leagues below you, that breeds a winning mentality.

“It’s a tight park and they will be up for it because they will see Rob Roy as a big scalp to take so we know it’s not going to be easy.

“But if we perform the way we are capable of and get through, we know that there will be at least a couple of big hitters going out and the draw could really open up.

“A cup run would be great because it would really raise the profile of the club. We would be into the last 32, we’re back at the top of the league and we’re still in the West of Scotland Cup.

“If you can get to Christmas still in all three of these competitions I think that’s a tremendous achievement and really sets you up for the second half of the season and give you something positive to aim for.”

Rob Roy go into the game boosted by a return to winning ways - and to the top of the Super League Premier Division table - with last week’s 2-0 win at Kilbirnie.

Maxwell said: “After two defeats in a row the most important thing was to get a win on the board and you don’t care how you do it.

“I said to them at half-time that if we scored first I couldn’t see them scoring but for the first 10 minutes of the second half they were the better side.

“But Willie [Sawyers] scored a great goal for us and once we got the second we could have gone on to score four or five.

“But I’d have take 2-0 before the game and hopefully that will give us confidence to take into Saturday’s tie.”
