Rugby season gets under way this weekend

SATURDAY saw the last of the training games for Cumbernauld Rugby Club’s senior squad before the start of the competitive season, with round one of the cup kicking-off this Saturday for the 1st XV with a home tie against local rivals Lenzie.

Last weekend’s games took place at the West of Scotland tournament at Burnbrae, with games against the host, Alan Glens, Lenzie and Clydebank allowing for a few combinations to be tried out amongst the squad. Victories against West and Clydebank, and close run results with Glens and Lenzie set the playing standard expected for the season ahead for both the 1st and 2nd XV teams.

Training for the senior teams (1st and 2nd XV) continues on Tuesdays and Thursdays evenings at the Rugby Club in Condorrat at 7pm. Under 18s training takes place at the same time.

The Rugby Club will this year be running their over 35s team, with games on a less regular and more social basis. The Old Boars’ first game is scheduled for mid September.

Training for our mini and youth sections has also started back, with mini training (primary aged kids) taking place on Sundays at the Rugby Club from 12 noon.

The youth section will this season be running teams for S1s and 2s, and under 15s, with games this Sunday – S1/2s at Coatbridge, and under 15s a cup game v Hamilton at home.

The under 15 squad have already kicked off their season with a game on Wednesday night against East Kilbride under floodlights at Calderglen Park. It was a good run out for the boys against a well organised team from the league above, and although they lost out in the end, they were never outplayed, with the main difference being that the hosts were more clinical in attack. Tries for Hickman and Thompson show there’s attacking options in both forwards and backs this season. Special mention must also go to Callum for his debut for the club.
