Battling Biggar Rugby Club's bid for Special General Meeting with SRU is on track

Biggar Rugby Club can officially lobby the SRU for a Special General Meeting (SGM) fighting against the voiding of their title winning 2019-20 Tennent’s National Division 1 campaign, with 25 of 137 Scottish clubs approached for support now voting ‘Yes’ to staging this meeting.

With no play possible since early March due to coronavirus, the sport’s governing body wrote off the season which upset a Biggar side crowned champions with two games to spare after winning 44-15 at Stirling Wolves on March 6.

The Hartreemill outfit have since been fighting the SRU in a bid to restore their triumph but they needed at least 24 clubs to back the SGM bid to trigger it, which has now happened.

Biggar RFC secretary Mike Booth said: “I’m very encouraged we have got these 25 ‘Yes’ votes relatively quickly.

“It will be nice to let the SRU know that we do have this level of support.

“Whether we have enough support to push that motion through (declaring Biggar champions and promoting them to an 11-team Premiership with no relegation throughout the divisions) we will see.

“I’m hopeful we will get an SGM now.”
