Ex-Biggar Rugby Club ace Rory Sutherland is picked for British Lions tour of South Africa this summer

The selection of eight Scots for this summer’s British Lions tour of South Africa is fantastic but the selection of Rory Sutherland was particularly pleasing for Biggar Rugby Club as the prop played at Hartreemill for two seasons in 2011/12 and 2012/13.

Biggar RFC past president Alistair Stewart said: “Rory was a great asset to Biggar and a very imposing figure in Biggar colours and it is no surprise that his career has gone from strength to strength.

"He moved to Gala, then Edinburgh before winning his first Scotland cap against Ireland in 2016. He is now a first choice for the national side.

“The club wishes the touring party every success in South Africa but of course takes great pride in wishing the Scots the very best of luck.”

As well as the eight Scots, the 37-man Lions squad consists of 11 Englishmen, eight Irishmen and 10 Welshmen. Wales second-row Alun Wyn Jones has confirmed as squad captain on his fourth tour.

This summer’s three test matches in South Africa will take place on July 24, July 31 and August 7, in Soccer City, Johannesburg; Cape Town and Ellis Park, Johannesburg respectively.

Meanwhile, Covid restrictions have meant that, while Biggar RFC Mini and Youth sections have recently been able to return to contact rugby, the seniors have

been restricted to non-contact fitness related work.

But this all changes next Monday, May 17, when this summer’s Touch tournament kicks off. There are 10 teams involved and games will take place on Monday evenings.
