Fears that Biggar won’t play Premiership rugby next season – even if they win appeal

Biggar Rugby Club secretary Mike Booth doesn’t think his side will be playing top flight league rugby next season – even if they are promoted to the Premiership.

The National Division 1 champions’ appeal against last season being null and voided due to coronavirus has garnered the support of 33 rival clubs, triggering a Special General Meeting with the SRU, possibly at the governing body’s AGM in August.

Booth, who will submit his appeal letter to the SRU imminently, said: “Everybody (on the Biggar RFC committee) thinks it could be the early New Year before we’re playing rugby again.

“And the way the SRU are talking is that it’s unlikely there’ll be a league because there just won’t be time to do that.

“It will possibly just be putting local derbies together against the likes of Peebles and Hamilton to play for cups.

“So if we win the appeal I think it would be 2021-22 before we were properly playing Premiership rugby.

Meanwhile, Biggar RFC were recognised as being Community Club of the Year at Friday evening’s annual SP Energy Network Awards.

Biggar past president Alistair Stewart said: “This is another huge award and honour for our club and is testament to the work undertaken at the club by all involved: committee, volunteers, coaches, members, players and friends, not forgetting the large number of sponsors whose support facilitates our progression.”
