Lenzie's Murrayfield dream is dashed despite draw

And their hopes of taking on Kelso High School in the Schools National Plate final on Wednesday were ended in the cruellest way when they were knocked out of their semi-final despite not even losing ther match.

The match with Caithness, played at West of Scotland, ended 12-12 as both teams served up a cracking and intensive game of rugby in front of a large and enthusiastic crowd who appreciated their efforts throughout the game.

But because Caithness were the visitors it was they who progress as competition rules dictate the away team goes through in the event of a drawn game.

Caithness started the game well and retained the ball to put Lenzie under pressure.

Good defence from Lennox, Allan and McCaffery kept Lenzie’s line intact initially until the visitors’ large forwards forced an early score which was easily converted.

Lenzie forwards were beginning to win ball at the breakdown and Cruickshanks was releasing Carvalho and McCrae through the centre to threaten Caithness.

The home side scored an excellent try when McCafferry powered over in the corner for an unconverted score.

The game was now very evenly balanced and Lenzie went 12-7 in front before the break when Cruickshanks stole the ball in contact and beat three defenders for a great individual score.

The second period remained tense with great defence from both sides cancelling each other out.

However Caithness forced another score through their forwards with 15 minutes left. Despite a great effort the score was unconverted and the match remained tied
 at 12-12.

Lenzie threw everything into the last 15 minutes but despite Kilday, Moran, McAllister and McIntyre all going close the visitors held on.

Player of the match was Lenzie’s inspirational captain Kioko Mbullu.
