A well-attended (virtual) players’ meeting was held recently and the mood for the season ahead was more positive than has been seen over the past couple of years.

Keen to put the difficulties of the 2019/20 season behind them, the playing group unanimously elected Ruairidh West as club captain.

In the absence of the normal AGM format, the appointment was subsequently ratified by the club’s ommittee, allowing Ruairidh to get to work immediately.

With more than 30 playing members already signed up to the new WhatsApp group, vice captains Connor McMillan, Kalvin Smith, Lenny Allen and Ross Grant have also been installed.

In addition to administrative duties, the players have also been helping with some socially distanced groundworks over the summer.

With the youth section also starting to look to the coming season, Sean McCluskey and Alan Paul were confirmed as Mini Section convenor and coach respectively.

Sean and Alan will be reaching out to previous youth players over the summer, looking to generate additional playing numbers, ready for when formal training can restart.

Club president Duncan Pine, thanked Ruairidh for stepping up as captain and wished him and the senior squad all the best for the season ahead, while also acknowledging the ongoing hard work Sean and Alan are doing to grow strength in the Mini Section.

He added: “The season ahead will provide all rugby clubs in Scotland with challenges that we have not faced before and I am pleased to see all sections of the club pulling together to help us drive forward the strength of rugby at Uddingston.”
