Šašić finished an incredible season as top goalscorer in the Frauen Bundesliga, UEFA Women’s Champions League and the World Cup as well as lifting the UEFA Women’s Champions League with her Frankfurt team mates.

Sadly for women’s football, Šašić announced her retirement after the World Cup this summer and without doubt leaves the sport at the very, very top.

On receiving her award, she spoke of ‘no regrets’ about retiring after an ‘incredible 11 years in the game’, but now feels the time is right to step back. Married to Croatian football player Marko Šašić, like many women her age, she has choices to make about family and other areas of her life and has spoken about being able to focus on other things such as a professional career.

Without doubt the women’s game has lost one of the most talented ever players and Germany and Frankfurt will find her very difficult to replace.
