Scott embarks on career of a lifetime

WHILE other 18-year-olds are busy celebrating their new-found 'legal' status, Kilsythian Scott Taggart is embarking on the career of a lifetime.

The young footballer was recently named Hibernian FC's Academy Player of the Year and is now hoping to break into the first team.

He said: "Getting the award was superb, it was a great achievement for myself. I'm really pleased to get the chance to step up (to the first team] for this season. I was on the bench a few times last year so I'm very much looking forward to being a part of the team a lot more often."

Scott, who grew up in Gateside Avenue, was offered a trial with the Easter Road club after playing in a friendly against one of their academy teams for the North Lanarkshire football development programme.

The former St Maurice's High pupil says he owes a lot to his time there.

"The coaches were brilliant," said Scott. "I used to just play with my boys' club, I would never have got the chance before that. The coaches are all ex-professionals and we played games against good opposition."

Despite his success, the midfielder is keeping his studs firmly on the ground.

He continued: "I don't really have long term goals, I try to take it a step at a time. This season I'm going to try and get into the manager's team and hopefully if I get in, stay in. I'm hoping to establish myself as a first team player and perform the best I can when I get a chance."

So, are we likely to see a Scotland jersey with Taggart, 8, on the back anytime soon?

"I would love to represent Scotland," he added. "I went at the end of last season with the Scotland under-19s. That was the first time I had been away with them. It was brilliant, I would love to do it again."
