Season ends on a high

Last weekend was an extremely busy time for Cumbernauld Indoor Bowling Club with the club hosting the Glasgow and District Championships.

Several club teams were in action and we were hoping for a very successful day.

However, the day before this on the Saturday the gents’ team were at the West Lothian Club contesting the final of the Scottish Knockout Cup
against Blantyre.

Expectations were high after the string of good results in previous rounds against more fancied opponents, but this time luck was not with the Cumbernauld team.

The gents fought well and gave Blantyre a good game but their opponents were that bit stronger and eventually pulled away to win the match. Cumbernauld should not be disheartened as they had played extremely well throughout
the competition.

So it was on to Sunday and another competition to win. Cumbernauld were represented in five of the finals, but were up against some very good teams. In the gents’ final, D. Geal put the disappointment of the previous day behind him and fought back from behind to record an excellent victory.

Next up was our under 25 representative, A.Barrie, but on the day luck was not with him and he narrowly lost his final. The senior gents’ fours were next but they also lost in a very close game.

We still had the gent’s and ladies’ fours to come and they gave the local supporters plenty to shout about. The gents’ team with J. Byron (skip), provided excitement right to the last end with the local team beating their opponents by a single shot. The ladies, with skip S. Wilson, was more comfortable to watch for the locals, as they took control of the game after a slow start and never looked like losing.

With three champions and two runners-up, coupled with the ladies winning the League, the trophy for the Team Championship went to Cumbernauld for the first time in several years, bringing the curtain down on a very
successful season. Special mention must be given to Eric Wightman and the members of the ladies’ and gents’ committees for organising the event and providing assistance on the day. All attending were in praise of the efficiency and smooth running of the competition.

The Indoor Bowling Club has completed their season and the majority of players have returned to their outdoor clubs for their summer competitions. However, the Stadium is still open during the summer months although on a restricted opening programme.

There are summer leagues operating on Tuesday and Friday mornings from 10am to noon. These are open to members and non-members, you just have to turn up and
get a disc. On Wednesdays and Thursdays there are bounce games for all to attend for fun, again just turn up and play. The rinks are also open from noon to 2pm if you do not wish to join in the organised games.

Phone Lorraine at the stadium on 01236 727852 for further information.
