Shona Girdwood misses out...by 43 seconds

DESPITE finishing as fourth woman overall at the World Triathlon Championships in a new personal best time, Clydesdale athlete Shona Girdwood remains less than happy.

Shona (40), formerly of Rosebank, who works as a South Lanarkshire Council athletics development officer, refused to take the plaudits despite recording her best finish in the event having been fifth at last year's staging in Australia.

"I was a bit disappointed to just miss out on a medal by 43 seconds this time," Shona said.

"I think I would rather have finished fifth!

"But I know that finishing fourth in the world is still a great achievement."

Shona was the only Scottish participant among the 131 competitors in Budapest.
