Shona Girdwood wins World Triathlon bronze medal

SCORCHING temperatures in Beijing this month didn’t bother Lanark-born triathlete Shona Girdwood, as she swam, rode and ran her way to a World Championship bronze medal.

Shona (41), was delighted with her times in the 1500m swim (21 minutes) and 43km bike ride (1hr 10mins), but felt she could have done better than her 41-minute effort in the 10.5km run.

She added: “I think my run was affected by the 10 weeks of training I missed earlier this summer due to a calf injury and a torn abdominal muscle, which was absolute agony.
