Spot kick woe for United

Cumbernauld United 0Ashfield 0Central League Cup round three(Ashfield won 4-3 pens)

THIS was a pretty dull affair with neither side playing to their true potential.

The main talking point was the first half sending off of United's Phil Barclay for a heavy tackle 30 minutes into the game.

United, handicapped in the second half with only ten men, gave as good as they got but failed to put any real pressure on the visiting defence.

The match ended 0-0 with penalties needed to decide the winners.

After five kicks, both sides had scored three times, with each keeper having saved two efforts each, so the shoot-out went to sudden death.

Carly netted from 12 yards for Ashfield but United's Dan Elliot placed his penalty just too wide of the post.

United must be applauded for their efforts and obviously a cramped fixture list in recent weeks has taken its toll on the squad.
