A young woman has been crowned Scottish Open Kickboxing Champion just two years after taking up the sport to improve her fitness.

Initially Stacey joined the club to improve her fitness and lose weight.

She competed in the ISKA a year ago and scooped bronze, then went on to win silver at the World Kickboxing Association (WKA) Scottish Open fight night.

Stacey, who works for Ladbrokes, said: “It was absolutely amazing to win, I couldn’t believe it. All my hard work has paid off.

“When I got bronze last time I thought next year the trophy is definitely going to be mine, and I worked for it.

“This was the only time my mum and dad couldn’t come to watch, but there were a couple of people from the club and my coach.”

Stacey is now gearing up for the next WKA event in February.

She added: “If you get first, second or third in your category you qualify to fight in the World Championships in Benidorm.

“I would definitely recommend kickboxing, especially to younger people, it keeps them busy. We’re trying to expand the club and get more people to join .”

Alex Truten, who runs Kirkintilloch Kickboxing, said: “Watching Stacey and her determination and drive to succeed has been amazing to see. After many years of martial arts I haven’t seen many that have been so driven to succeed in this sport.

“This young lady really did put her heart and soul into achieving this goal.”
