Thankerton Bowling Club members enjoy 50th anniversary celebrations

A LARGE group of bowling dignitaries attended the 50th anniversary celebrations of Thankerton Bowling Club.

Top brass, including Bowls Scotland director Wes Pollock, were among 60 people at a historic occasion which featured a game of bowls and buffet lunch.

One of the highlights of the day came when Thankerton BC committee man Jim Hope read out a beautiful poem written by Miss Min Weir of Cornhill, Coulter, half a century ago.

Jim told Gazette Sport: “The lady knew some people from the club and decided to compose the poem to explain how the green was established.

“I thought the poem was absolutely brilliant. It was excellent that somebody took time out to use their imagination to describe the making of the green.

“The railway is right beside the club and the poem made reference to the diesel power era.”
