The Goalie backing Spanish and Torres for Euros

WITH the Euro 2012 football championships starting in Ukraine and Poland this Friday and Scotland once again absent after failing to qualify, Carluke-based Andy Goram has been looking back at playing in goal for the Scots on the only two occasions we qualified for the tournament.

Andy (48), played under Andy Roxburgh in Sweden in 1992 and Craig Brown in England four years later. On both occasions, the Scots came agonisingly close to qualifying for the knock-out stages.

Andy was speaking as he put on charity bets for Euro 2012 on behalf of the two Ladbrokes shops in Carluke High Street.

The Goalie staked £100 on Spain to win the tournament and £50 each on Spain’s Fernando Torres and Germany’s Mario Gomez to be top goalscorer. If any of these bets come up, the money goes to Andy’s nominated charity Travistrek.

Andy said: “I think the tournament will be very exciting and wide open, but Spain are on a different level to everyone else.

“Torres has struggled for Chelsea, but at the last Euros and World Cup he was great and he will be fresh after not playing much this season. Gomez has been scoring goals for fun and also looks a good bet.”
