The raining champs

THE rain came down, and down and down.

But that didn’t stop a Scotland side facing up to the ‘Auld Enemy’ in Cumbernauld at the weekend – on the bowling green!

The event was the annual Prison Service Bowls Tournament between Scotland and England.

The two nations’ prison officers have been facing each other in this bowling tournament for almost 20 years.

Venues throughout Scotland and England have played host to the fixture, and this was the third time that it had visited Cumbernauld, with the 2012 match taking place at Cumbernauld Bowling Club in The Village on Saturday and Sunday.

Over the past nine years it has been the Scottish team that have come away victorious, and that continued this year, with the ‘home’ side winning by 56 shots.

Gordon Kerr, president of the Scottish squad, said: “It was an excellent tournament, and Cumbernauld Bowling Club made us very welcome.

“Their hospitality and the entertainment that was laid on was first class.”
