Thrilling draw keeps Rob Roy flying high in the league

A LATE converted penalty award prevented Rob Roy from leaving Beechwood Park with maximum points in an exciting encounter which saw six goals, three dismissals and countless bookings.

It was Talbot who made the early running with Milliken testing Rabs keeper Robertson before Spence fired wide.

Robertson then did well to parry a Young shot for a corner. Midway through the half Rabs became more of an attacking force, with Diack sending a volley inches past the post. Then in the 23rd minute the visitors snatched the opener when Diack sent over a square pass for Bradley to place a shot into the corner of the net.

Rob Roy’s lead lasted only seven minutes. Chic Connolly was harshly adjudged to handle in the box and Pope stepped up to tuck the ball past Robertson from the penalty spot. Spence then Gormley had chances for Talbot to take the lead, but were off target.

Two minutes before the break Talbot went in front when Young sent a pass across the Rabs goalmouth for Gormley to make a simple tap-in from close range.

Rabs were again level in the 47th minute when McGoldrick was penalised and sent off for preventing a goal-scoring opportunity in the penalty box. Chic Connolly made an expert job with the spot kick. Rabs silenced the home support by taking a well-worked 58th minute lead. In a move involving Meechan and Connolly, the ball was switched to Bradley who made no mistake from inside the box.

As play raged from end to end Pope headed over the Rabs bar then at the other end Meechan fired past.

In a period of Rabs pressure Lindsay came close to increasing Rabs’ lead on a couple of occasions. Rob Roy were hit by a double sending-off in a matter of two minutes when Lindsay was red carded for a rash tackle then C. Connoly followed him off the field in the 83rd minute for an infringement in the box.

That resulted in Talbot’s second penalty award which Pope converted despite Robertson’s valiant attempts to keep it out to end the scoring and ensure a share of the spoils.
