Tough challenges

Each game provided tough challenges in their own right, and whilst the age groups differed, there were similar lessons to be learned.

The under 14s took on one of Scotland’s top Club sides (Currie), the under 16s visited league favourites, Hamilton, whilst the 1st XV welcomed last seasons league winners, Strathendrick. In all three games, Cumbernauld showed no shortage of effort or ambition, but it’s the clinical nature with which each team was put to the sword, and the similarity of game plan used by the opposition that’s the notable difference between the teams.

For large phases in all games, Cumbernauld had their fair share of the ball, but the game of rugby today is as much about what you do when you’re not in possession, and how quickly you can be punished for even small mistakes. The opposition showed how effective it can be to move the ball wide after defences have been drawn into contact situations.

These games will have to be put down to a learning experience for the teams, with each having to dust themselves down to face the challenges the new week brings.

In addition to the Rugby World Cup starting this weekend, for those interested in taking an active part in rugby, or are just interested in cheering on your local rugby club, Cumbernauld 1st XV play Strathaven away on Saturday, the 2nd XV kick off their league campaign with a home tie against Waysiders, whilst on Sunday in the youth section, the under 18s play Cumnock, the under 16s play Argyll, and the under 14s play Marr.
