Tough test against Blue Toon

BRECHIN City may have been installed as favourites to take the second division title, but that didn’t stop Clyde dumping them out of the League Cup on Saturday.

Jim Duffy’s men endured their second spell of extra-time in a week after a one-all draw, but this time there was no penalty shoot-out heartache as the ball hit the net no less than four times during the 30 minute period.

Thankfully, three of those were past City ‘keeper Craig Nelson as The Bully Wee ran out 4-2 winners.

Duffy said: “It was a tremendous result. I was absolutely delighted, we played very well and really deserved to win.

“It’s a big victory or us, going up against one of the most consistent teams in the second division over the last three or four years, and beating them at their own ground.”

The league season gets underway this Saturday, with Clyde facing a tough test against Peterhead at Broadwood.

Duffy added: “They’ve made the biggest signing this summer, getting Rory McAllister to step down from the second division having been top goal scorer back to back.

“They’re quite rightly favourites and it’ll be a real test for us.

“But the players have hopefully taken a lot of confidence from our first two matches.”

Meanwhile, Clyde will play Motherwell at Broadwood in the second round of the Scottish Communities League Cup, on either August 23 or 24.
