Tragic death of 18-year-old footballer (18) after accident at beauty spot

Tributes have been paid to talented young football player Liam Scott who died last week.

Liam who played for Holytown Colts, Jerviston Blues and Bellshill Juniors fell into the water of Falls of Clyde on Thursday (June 18)

Emergency services tried to rescue the 18-year-old, but tragically his body was later found near Corra Linn on Friday.

In a statement, Bellshill Athletic FC said: “Everyone connected with the club were devastated to hear the news yesterday of the tragic accident which has claimed such a young life.

“Liam Scott was only with us for last season but had such an impact on and off the field.

“Thoughts and prayers are with Willie, Pauline, Lara, Harry and all of his extended family and friends at this very sad time. Rest in Peace.”

Hamilton Accies FC also paid tribute to Liam, telling followers on social media that: “The club are dreadfully sad to learn of the untimely passing of Bellshill Athletic FC player Liam Scott, 18, who was in our Academy for 6 years before leaving last summer.

“He tragically died on Thursday evening. Our thoughts are with his family & friends just now.”

Police Scotland have launched an investigation into Liam’s death, and said they would be submitting a report to the Procurator Fiscal.

Meanwhile tribute was also paid by the head teacher of Liam’s former school, Braidhurst High, Carolyn Rooney.

She said: “Although Liam had left school, he had a large group of friends who have just completed their sixth year and everyone is deeply saddened to learn of his tragic passing.

“Liam was an enthusiastic footballer and had an infectious personality, with many friends at the school, who are devastated at hearing this news, as is the entire school community here at Braidhurst.

“Our thoughts are with Liam’s family and friends at this time and with all our pupils who will be upset at this much-loved friend, classmate and team mate.

“Sadly, this is made more difficult by the fact that we cannot be as close together as we are normally as a community at this time but staff are still available to offer support to anyone in need.”
