Tryst take League title

Liberton................................. 29

Tryst 77.................................. 38

TRYST ’77 won the men’s Scottish League with victory over Liberton in the final league game of the season.

The win completed an excellent league campaign for the Cumbernauld side, who only lost one match the entire campaign and saw them regain the title back from current holders Gracemount who fought hard in their attempts to hold on to the hard-earned trophy.

Glasgow also provided a very strong challenge this season and only lost out by the narrowest of margins in the last couple of games of the season when a couple of defeats put paid to their hopes.

They have, however, been showing signs over recent seasons of steady improvement and that they were almost ready to mount a challenge. This year further re-enforced that and showed they are on the verge of winning something. They also look strong, well organised and set to sustain a challenge for the seasons to come.

This three way battle for the title made for some thrilling and closely contested games and Tryst were delighted to prevail at the end of the season.

Prior to the final set of league matches Tryst held the advantage over nearest rivals Gracemount and Glasgow who were both joint second, three points behind. With the significantly greater goal difference that Tryst also had over their rivals then the league was within touching distance but mathematically not guaranteed.

With the final match against Liberton looming, the Cumbernauld side knew they could be facing a potential banana skin and had to be totally focused. Liberton on their day and with a full compliment of players are a match for any team and Tryst had to be prepared.

After the demands of a heavy end of season, Tryst were missing a few players with injuries but still hoped and felt they had a strong enough team to safely negotiate the game.

Tryst started the match reasonably well but Liberton were feisty and battling hard and the Cumbernauld side couldn’t establish any real authority on the game. Although Tryst held the lead they couldn’t shake Liberton and were only a couple of goals ahead throughout the first half and at half time.

After a similar opening spell at the start of the second half Tryst finally seemed to break Liberton’s resistance and increased their advantage to 5 goals. Although the lead was never as secure or as comfortable as the Cumbernauld side might hope, they also didn’t look in too much danger of letting things slip and towards the end of the game, as Tryst increased the tempo, they managed to stretch the advantage to something a bit less nail biting. At the final whistle the players were delighted to have won back the league.

After a trophyless campaign last season Tryst were delighted to secure a league and cup double for 2010-2011 and would like to thank Jim Jack Brake & Clutch Services, Stuart McLaughlan Joiners, Grants, Dave Brogan Physiotherapy, Morrisons, World of Turquoise and the People’s Postcode Lottery for all their support over the season. Tryst know that Glasgow and Gracemount will come back strong again next year and will need to be ready for the challenge.

With the Scottish domestic season now over there is still the challenge of annual Liverpool International Handball Tournament. And the club are also keeping their fingers crossed for several younger players in the club who are currently training with the Scotland Youth Squads and hoping to be part of the world’s largest international handball tournament – The Partille Cup – held in Gothenburg, Sweden.
