United go through in Central League Cup

Yoker Athletic 1Cumbernauld United 3Central League Cup, round two

WEATHER-WISE it was a perfect day for football, plus Holm Park was in tip-top condition.

However, the match didn't really come alive till after 20 minutes had gone by. United mounted an attack and keeper McGinty saved well from Mills. The home side retaliated and in a flowing move McLernon hit a great pass from Nicolson on the left past United keeper to put Yoker 1-0 ahead after 22 minutes. Stung by this United rallied and first Steele had an effort saved by keeper and on the 30 minute mark Mills gathered ball on right and crossed for Elliott to make it 1-1.

United kept up the pressure and Brown struck an Elliott pass just wide. Burns was next to have a go and seeing the keeper come out to close him down carefully lobbed the ball over him to net United's second goal just before the break.

The second half was a bit rugged with passes going astray and although Yoker tried hard Dearie, Marsh and Buchanan kept control along with Hill. In fact big Craig was booked, unfairly I thought, for colliding with opponent after 55 minutes.

After 72 minutes Yoker gained a corner that was cleared out by United's defence to Burns who put Mills in with a Grant pass and Ben struck home to put United 3-1 ahead and tie up the match. United then lost Hill after 83 minutes when the big defender was given a second yellow card for a tackle from behind and off he went.

United, with ten men, saw the game out and now go in to the hat for the next round.

This coming week midweek football begins. Tonight (Wednesday) United travel to Larkhall on league business against the Jags, kick-off 6.30 p.m., then on Saturday it's a journey to Shotts to play Bon Accord, again on league business. Six points from these games would surely put United in a great position in the promotion race, so let's hope that aim can be achieved.
