United's cup run comes to abrupt end

Cumbernauld United...................... 0

Vale of Leven............................... 2

Emirates Scottish Junior Cup

Second round

VALE kicked off into the Village end goal and pressed the United defence from the word go.

The visitors took the lead after four minutes when left winger McNaught gathered the ball, ran on and spotting United keeper Buchanan too far out from the goal line lobbed the ball over the keeper and into the net. This was a really stupid goal to lose.

Keeping up their pressure Vale won a penalty seven minutes later when Renwick brought down Bowie in the box. Vale's Brown took the spot kick but keeper Buchanan parried his effort away to keep the score at 1-0.

Buoyed

One would have thought that United would be buoyed by Buchanan's save, but to be honest they appeared to be at sixes and sevens as they tried to get into the game. The Vale were in complete control and although United had a few efforts at goal, just could not make any real impression on a controlling Vale side. So at the break it was 1-0 to the visitors.

The second half began with United forcing a corner and from Steele's cross David Marsh headed the ball into the keeper's hands.

Vale replied with effort from McNaught which keeper Buchanan tipped over for a corner.

Vale really sealed their place in round 3 when after 53 minutes McNaught again broke through United's defence and beat keeper Buchanan to score his and Vale's second goal.

Again United tried to counter and nearly countered, but McClymont's header from Barclay's cross, hit the bar and rebound was hit past for a corner.

United still couldn't make a breakthrough and Vale in control had no intentions of allowing them to do so. The game continued and much to the United support, there was no glimmer of hope of a comeback. To further dampen United's day Gary Gibson was sent off for a silly foul (second yellow card) and thus United's cup run came to an abrupt end.

This Saturday United have no game as opponents Ashfield play their second round tie as weather conditions saw their game at Blantyre postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
