United's poorest showing of season

United's poorest showing of season

Yoker Athletic 2

Cumbernauld United 1

New Coin Automatic West of Scotland Cup

THE truth is usually hard to take but United truthfully served up what can only be described as their poorest performance of the season so far.

Starting brightly and in full control they took the lead after five minutes when Gary McClymont headed in a cross from Burnie Mills.

Seven minutes later Mills rounded the keeper after finding good position and cutting through defence, but his parting shot was cleared and diverted clear.

They had Yoker at their mercy but gradually the grip they had started to loosen.

The home side, playing on the break, were dealing well with United's attacks due mainly to lack of positive passing and crosses by United.

United's next chance came after 31 minutes when Jim Steele connected with a cross but keeper Clark cleared. Yoker should have levelled but McManus, in the clear, shot wide of an open goal.

The second half was only seven minutes old when Craig Hill found Yoker's McLarnon on the right just five yards from goal line. Reilly swung over and Harvey bulleted in header to level scores.

From then on United really lost it and showing no real fight succumbed to the Yoker breakaways.

After 63 minutes Yoker's McLarnon broke up the right flank and beating Dearie cut inside to shoot past McLaughlin to make it 2-1 to the home side.

With it all to do United really never got to grips and the harder they tried the less effective they became, even though they had what was thought was the equalizer chopped off in the last minute. So that was that.
