Westfield Primary pupils enjoy badminton

Taking place every Wednesday morning, primary six pupils are put through their paces by fully qualified badminton coaches and are taught all the basics of the game.

David Johnston, who coaches badminton on behalf of North Lanarkshire Leisure, said: “The pupils have really taken to the game and their enthusiasm has been tremendous. We teach them the rules of the game, how to hold the racquet properly, how to serve and return, and to have fun!”

The youngsters are put through a full warm-up before they take to the court to hone their skills.

Westfield teacher Carol Marshall said: “The kids really look forward to the lessons. The coaches are brilliant and it is a great opportunity for the pupils to experience a sport they might not otherwise get involved in.

“You can see them developing their coordination, technique, confidence and of course they all enjoy the physical exercise.”

Lauren Gardiner (9) from Cumbernauld said: “I love playing badminton and the lessons are excellent.”

And Ryan Gardiner (9) added: “Everyone likes playing and my favourite bit is the games and serving.”

Additional lessons for youngsters and adults of all ages and abilities are available at Broadwood and the Tryst sports centres on weekdays and weekends.

Sessions cost £3 for one hour lessons.
