Whole community enjoys the Cumbernauld 10k

The last burst of summer helped make the annual Cumbernauld 10k another great succcess on Sunday.

As well as the seniors race for men and women, the event also provided fun runs for kids at 1K and 3K distances, and fun events for the whole family at Broadwood.

Councillor Jean Jones, Depute Provost of North Lanarkshire, said:“Cumbernauld welcomed around 800 competitors to the annual 10k and children’s races at Broadwood Stadium, which was again a great success. It has become a popular event in the Scottish athletics calendar, with a number of elite athletes competing for a personal best time over the distance. The event also attracts runners, young and old, who enjoy running as a way to keep fit and healthy.

“Our children’s 1k and 3k runs are always very competitive with youngsters keen to be first across the finish line, which this year for the first time was inside Broadwood Stadium and gave the event a fun atmosphere. For the second year, we held a Victory Mile for children and families supported by our charity partners, the Scottish Spina Bifida Association and the Centre for Children with Motor Impairments. This was a really inspiring event and raises valuable funds for the charities, who are both based in Cumbernauld.

“The crowd were entertained throughout the day by North Lanarkshire Schools’ Pipe Band, Elite Dance School and the Jump Rope Academy and we had a special visit from Clyde, the Commonwealth Games 2014 mascot.

“I would like to thank everyone who took part and our sponsors – Strathmore Spring Water, NHS Lanarkshire, the Cumbernauld News and Campsies Centre (Cumbernauld) Ltd – for their help is making the event so successful.’’
