Young southside sport stars

Some of the most promising local sport stars have been excelling on the international stage this week.

Southsiders made up almost a quarter of the Scotland under-18 girls hockey squad which faced England at the weekend.

Hutchesons’ Grammar school trio Lucy Lanigan, Bethan Mann and Kirstin McIntosh were joined by Clydesdale pair Heather Howie (Craigholme) and Jennifer Hendry (St Aloysius) in the trip to Lilleshall.

Although they suffered unfortunate defeats of 3-2 and 3-0, next weekend, the group will have a chance to make up for it when they face Wales.

Meanwhile, Hutchesons’ duo James Malcolm and Josh Rutganur both started in Scotland under 17s rugby win against England at the Wellington Festival on Tuesday.

Scrum half Rutganur set up the third try of Scotland six in a 38-10 win.

Tomorrow, Scotland face England Reds, with both of the young GHA stars hoping to help make it three wins out of three in the Wellington Festival, following a 32-10 win against France A on Sunday.

Both he and team-mate Adam Barnett were involved in a 65-3 win against Romania on Sunday and an 85-3 win against Germany.

The squad will now meet Italy on Saturday in Lourdes to determine the winners of the FIRA/AER Tier 1 under-18 competition.
