Underbank Primary School pupil Sam (10) has just signed a pro youth contract with the Fir Park side, having starred for ’Well’s Fun Fours, Community and Academy teams in recent years.

His dad Roddy, of Nethan Foot, Brig Road, said: “Sam has been involved with Motherwell FC for four years and is doing very well for himself.

“He is a right-sided midfielder or striker who has great commitment, a great first touch and a burst of speed. Sam’s coaches always say that he has too much pace for his own good.

“His long-term aim is to play for the Motherwell first team, something which my grandfather did when he played one game in the 1970s.”

Sam – who put pen to paper on his pro youth contract on May 6 with ’Well Children’s Academy boss Paul Burns – will play seven-a-side football for the next two years before entering the competitive 11-a-side environment.

His family are all now Motherwell fans and regularly watch Sam starring for the team in their home games at Braidhurst High School.

“Motherwell run a great set-up,” Roddy added.

“It is a terrific club. Sam has even been given tickets to go to three games within the past couple of seasons. And he’ll get another free ticket to go to the last league game of the season at home to Partick Thistle on May 23.

“That is a crucial match for Motherwell as they are desperate to stay in the Premiership.”
