Calum Blair (16) from East Kilbride was diagnosed with cancer when he was six years old and underwent gruelling surgery and chemotherapy.

He was supported by the cancer support charity CLIC Sargent, which was chosen as the beneficiary of The Motherwell Symphonic Band’s annual concert in Motherwell Concert Hall.

The concert, which starts at 7.30pm, will include music from the movies including James Bond, The Lion King, Les Miserables, West Side Story, the Jungle Book and many more.

The Motherwell Symphonic Band was set up by Hughina Naylor more than 30 years ago, originally consisting of her most exceptional music pupils.

Very quickly the success and reputation of the band expanded and they won several awards over the following decades, performing across Europe, including Paris, Prague, Barcelona and Cologne.

The band has raised more than £170,000 for various charities since it began and this year the money will go to CLIC Sargent which provides practical, emotional and financial support to children and young people with cancer, and their families.

CLIC Sargent supported Calum during his treatment, visiting his school to advise teachers and students about his condition, as well as providing emotional support for him and his brother and financial advice for the family.

His mother Jackie said: “CLIC Sargent is a fantastic charity and it’s great that the concert is raising money for such a vital cause. When I see Calum performing on stage I think about how far he has come. The cancer experience was a horrible time and I am so proud of him.”

Ms Naylor added: “It has been an honour and a privilege to conduct the Motherwell Symphonic Band since I first formed it more than 30 years ago.

“Our talented musicians who give their time voluntarily and hope to raise a wonderful amount for CLIC Sargent.”
