A Big World for Stevie

Eight months ago many people in Scotland may not have heard of Stevie McCrorie.

But all that changed when the young fireman appeared on ‘The Voice’ and stormed his way through all the heats to finally win the BBC talent show.

Now he is preparing for the release of his debut album, ‘Big World’, on January 8 and a new single which will be out at the end of next month.

The father-of-one revealed the inspiration for the 11-track collection: “It has been my family – my wife Amy and daughter Bibi – and the journey I have been on,” he said.

“I have had ideas for some of the songs for a long time so it has been good to finally record them. For instance I wrote Big World when Bibi was born three years ago and it is about my life transforming through parenthood. The songs are very emotional and they are powerful at the same time. There are three or four upbeat songs as well as some softer ones and a few ballads. It is a good mixture and I think it is a good album. It will be great to finally get it out in January.”

Stevie said it took two months to put the album together in the summer when he was in London and he recorded it in August.

He continued: “I gave this album everything I’ve got. I worked really hard on it and I really hope people will like it. I was offered a covers album but I wanted to record my own music. I wrote this album and I am confident people will be surprised when they hear it. It’s an album that will stand the test of time and I know people will still like it in years to come.”

When asked if he has a favourite song the 30-year-old said it changes from week to week, but he did give ‘Lungs’ a special mention saying it was ‘an emotional song’. Stevie went on to say that he loves every track as they are all good in their own right.

As well as the new album, the Scottish singer also plans to tour next year with a couple of dates already in the diary – in Oran Mor in Glasgow on March 27 and The Caves in Edinburgh on March 28.

“I played King Tuts in Glasgow recently and it was a sell out,” he said.

“I played some of the new tracks and the atmosphere was amazing. So it should be even better by March though as people will have heard the album and they will know the songs.”

It has been an exciting few months for Stevie and while he enjoyed taking part in ‘The Voice’ he wants to be recognised as an artist in his own right as opposed to just being the winner of a talent show.

“I’m proud of winning The Voice and it was an amazing achievement but I now want to build up my own fan base, so people can get to know my music. But I know that is going to take time.”

Stevie dreams of being able to perform at Glastonbury one day – as any artist would – but said so far a highlight has been taking to the stage at T in the Park, which he would love to do again.

Stevie revealed his old job at Kirkcaldy Fire Station has been left open until March.

“It is a great job and I was happy with my life before The Voice.

“The music industry is really tough so I have to keep my options open because I have a family to look after.”

But Stevie said his family helps to keep him grounded, particularly having Bibi – in fact, he revealed he is still mobbed by fans every time he goes to her nursery!

“It’s been a really good year and it was an achievement to have the whole country behind me. It was rare and I have to savour it and enjoy the success I have achieved so far. Hopefully more things will come and next year will be even better.”
