An open invite to the Games

The Commonwealth Games is coming to Strathclyde Country Park and local people can get in on the action for free.

On Thursday, July 24 and Saturday, July 26 the park will host the individual men’s and women’s competitions (Thursday) and the team relay (Saturday).

It promises to be a historic and fun-filled event as the area sees the first gold medals of the 2014 Games presented.

The council has created spectator areas around the park “to give local residents and visitors the chance to watch the Triathlon, soak up the atmosphere and cheer on Team Scotland” – which includes North Lanarkshire athlete Grant Sheldo.

Provost Jim Robertson said: “We’ve worked really hard to create opportunities for local people to be a part of the Games and there are free-to-view spectator areas throughout the park.”

However local people and visitors should avoid travelling by car where possible.”

There is no parking for the event in Strathclyde Country Park. Special Park&Ride and Park&Walk facilities are being set up, but thesehave limited spaces and visitors may face a long walk to the park.

The action starts at 11am on the Thursday and at 12.30pm on the Saturday but organisers are telling people to get there as early as possible to beat the crowds.

Paul Jukes, the council’s executive director of regeneration and environmental services, said: “If you do intend to come, it’s important you plan ahead.

“For the best experience, walk, use public transport, and arrive early.”
