“His finest book, in my opinion at least, was On Foot Through Clydesdale.”

John Lees Carvel was born in 1895 and was a journalist but he also published a number of books about Scotland.

On Foot Through Clydesdale came out in 1932. He explores the well-known parts as well as the hidden gems of Clydesdale in this delightful, nostalgic travel classic, covering history, folklore, traditions and landscape.

Following persuasion by David Carvel, Birlinn is republishing it in paperback, and it will be launched at the Corn Exchange on Thursday July 30. at 7.30pm. David and his cousin John Carvel (the author’s grandson) will present the book with special guests The Dukes of Uke providing musical entertainment.
