One of the highlights of the annual Biggar Little Festival, its big day out, is set to prove a suitably big hit this Sunday, October 23.

There will be a packed programme of street entertainments and shows and displays in various venues, and this year sees one innovation in the form of a kite festival.

There is a kite workshop for youngsters in the Gillespie Centre on Saturday, and on Sunday afternoon, they can set their kites soaring into the skies at Rowhead and watch a display which includes parachuting bears.

Sunday also sees a storytelling trail with ‘Hairy Maclary from Biggarton Dairy’ and the chance to climb an ice wall.

There will also be a guided tour of the Biggar Puppet Theatre museum for youngsters, with the chance to have a go at working some puppets.

The programme for adults includes a book fair and flea market at the puppet theatre, a stone-carving workshop at Rachan, near Broughton, and henna painting at the Taj Mahal, that being its charity event of the year.

There are food and art and craft fairs in the municipal hall and St March’s Hall, where home baking will be served, and for those looking for something stronger than coffee, the Biggar Beer and Gin Festival continues at the Crown Inn on Sunday.

For those more mechanically minded, Biggar Gasworks Museum is holding a steam day revolving around a coal-fired boiler and steam-driven plant.

The Albion Museum is also open, as is a fossil-hunters’ exhibition at the Biggar and Upper Clydesdale Museum.

There are art and photographic exhibitions throughout the town, including the schools’ street gallery in shop windows.

Outdoors there will be street entertainment, again by Mischief Le Bas, and horse and carriage rides, but indoors the Corn Exchange hosts an open stage in the afternoon, with the best of local talent lining up to entertain.

And there are no fewer than three musical performances in the evening.

Biggar Corn Exchange is hosting singer-songwriter Andy Munro and daughter Flora in AM/FM, fresh from Belladrum 2016, along with guest musicians.

Carluke’s Shine Youth Music Theatre will be performing a selection of songs from musicals in the municipal hall.

And in St Mary’s Hall, the Eastfield and Harthill Flute Orchestra are in concert.

Music-lovers will be spoiled for choice on Sunday night too.
