Epic climb thatraised £5k forCraighalbert

Anything is possible if you believe, if you’re patient and never, ever give up – according to two intrepid Carrickstone women.

In January we reported how pals Corinne Leslie and Sharon Mooney set off to climb Mt Kilimanjaro to raise money for cherished Cumbernauld cause the Craighalbert Centre – a national resource for children with special sensory needs.

They reached their goal after trekking for seven days, and arrived at the summit of the mighty mountain in the teeth of a gale.

Safe home, they began to tot up the many sponsor donations made through their Justgiving site, charity events and from friends, colleagues and local firms.

Now they’re thanking everyone who helped, with the message: “We trained hard, dedicated a lot of our personal time into fundraising in the hope we would achieve our goal and on January 31 we did just that!

“We say this with a huge big smile across our faces – two normal women with a shed load of determination actually did it.”

The stunning total of £5,190.88 was collected, enough to buy state of the art equipment for Craighalbert

It’s a special bed which, say Sharon and Corinne, is valued by the staff and children alike.

Its design allows children to be positioned comfortably in a variety of ways that support them through their complex postural management.

On the Facebook page detailing their adventure, and the fundraising effort, the pair explain how they were able to see the equipment in action while renewing acquaintance with the children.

Besides this important technical aid to the centre they’ve also helped to keep Craighalbert to the fore in local fundraising efforts.

Meanwhile their sight of the summit of Kilimanjaro was “as close to the stars as we’re likely to get”.
