From west to east and back

After her five older children have flown the next Lizzie is left to support her invalid husband and youngest daughter Isabella.

Willie and Isabella are close as Lizzie has several jobs and a little enterprise to attend to leaving the very gullible Isabella with her Dad’s storytelling, of which she believes every word.

Add to the mix three gossips who pop in to chat with Willie and keep him up to date with the local scandals and a devious doctor’s wife and you have a recipe for tears, laughter and a huge dose of nostalgia.

“We all have a Lizzie in the family” said granddaughter and playwright Isabella Baronello. “Unsung heroines — I’ll not let my daughters forget her because I’ll keep telling them all about her.”

And all because she was researching her family tree.

Isabella added: “

“Lizzie’s family came to Scotland from Ireland in 1815. They worked as silk printers in Newton Mearns. but I was intrigued by how their fortunes fell on hard times and they ended up in Bridgeton — and, then, to find out that they had started off in Newton Mearns only a few streets from where I now live.”
