Garden takes centre stage

A cast of more than 150 will gather at the Citizens Theatre, joined by First Nation storytellers from Canadian Theatre company Debajehmujig as part of the Glasgow 2014 Cultural Programme.

Boasting the biggest community cast to date, Citizens Learning team has recruited a professional creative team to present five al fresco shows at the Gorbals rose garden.

A spokeswoman said: “The show is a celebration of Glasgow’s distinctive cultural identity and the changing face of the Gorbals as well as an insight into the history, traditions and beliefs of the Debajehmujig Storytellers, a theatre company based in Wikwemikong Unceded Indian Reserve on Manitoulin Island, Canada.”

There will then be a 300-strong procession of audience members through the Gorbals with live performances and music lining the route to the fragrant Gorbals Rose Garden.

Co-Director Elly Goodman said “Through Festival 2014, we have the opportunity to create a spectacular event that celebrates the best of both of our cultures and to connect as commonwealth countries.”

Co-Director Neil Packham said “It’s a fantastic opportunity for the huge variety of people from all walks of life, to produce something really memorable for our local community.”

On Common Ground runs from tomorrow until July 31. Performances at Gorbals Rose Garden from 7.30pm until 9pm, excluding Sunday and Monday, July 27 and 28. Entry free.

To join the pre-show precession, meet at the Citizens Theatre at 6.30pm.
