Hi Hi's launch bid to return to Cathkin Park

A new proposal by Third Lanark AFC has been launched which could see them return to their historic home at Cathkin Park in the city's southside.

The club went bust in 1967 and Cathkin Park fell into disrepair. The Council bought the land in 1969 and it is now leased out by Glasgow Live to various football teams across the city.

Third Lanark AFC were refounded in 1996 and have gone from strength to strength and won the Greater Glasgow Premier Amateur Football League this season with three games to spare. Thirds currently play their matches at Vale of Clyde’s Fullarton Park in Tollcross but have ambitious plans to return the club to their spiritual home at Cathkin Park.

Ian Alexander, chairman, said: “We want to establish Third Lanark as a football and sporting club at the centre of the local community. We’ve had meetings with Glasgow City Council regarding our proposals and they have been extremely positive. The plans for a five-phase development would initially cost about £50,000 for a basic infrastructure.

“It’s a five-year, £5 million plan which would see a 2000-seater stand, smaller pitches and car parking built.We want to forge close links with Govanhill. It’s the most racially diverse part of Scotland with more than 40 nationalities within a square mile.”

Steven Livingston, who is standing in the Langside ward, welcomed the proposals and attached his support.

He said: “I welcome Third Lanark’s proposals to redevelop Cathkin Park and return it to its former glory. It would be great for the local community to have another excellent facility in the area which can bring everyone together.”
