It’s ‘farewell, possums’ for Aussie star Barry

DAME Edna is hanging up her sequins, and calling time on a decades-long starring role on the stages of the world.

The man behind the glasses, Barry Humphries, may be on his farewell tour — but the good news is that he’s chosen to visit the King’s Theatre along the way, for EAT PRAY LAUGH!

There’s more than just the Dame under the Australian entertainer’s belt, and he’s bringing them all along for the ride; the honourable Sir Les Patterson (cultural attaché with a fondness for the bevvy) and grandfatherly Sandy Stone too.

But let’s face it, audiences will be out in force to see Edna Everage herself — and the housewife superstar appears in act two of the show to chat about gender, ethnicity and climate change.

The show is by Australian theatre director Simon Phillips — the man behind the original Priscilla, Queen of the Desert — which has to be a mark in its favour.

The design is by Brian Thomson, the man behind Australian and London productions of Jesus Christ Superstar and The Rocky Horror Show, as well the closing ceremony of the Sydney Olympic Games.

So far, so fabulous.

And so, whether it’s with tears of sadness or tears of laughter, it’s time for possums all over the world to say farewell to Dame Edna and Barry Humphries.

Tissues at the ready...

EAT PRAY LAUGH! runs the King’s February 11-15. Tickets are £17.90-£80.90 from www.atgtickets.com.
