Sherlock: The Abominable Bride will see Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman reprise their roles as Holmes and Watson in a one-off episode set in Victorian London in 1895.

Co-creator and executive producer Steven Moffat, announced at San Diego Comic Con in July that: “Sherlock on the big screen. For us, it’s a giant leap backwards - into Victorian London. The mean streets of 1895 have never looked so good!”

Moffat has also said of the one-off episode: “We never bothered to explain what we were doing in modern day London,” Moffat pointed out. “So why do we have to bother explaining what they’re doing in Victorian London, when that’s where they’re supposed to be?”

Moffatt, and co-writer Mark Gatiss, stumbled across the idea when they were having a “geek day” during production on one of their separate titles.

“Mark and I were having a fun day on set, and then we just thought: ‘Could we ever just do maybe one scene or some dream sequel or something?’

And then we just thought, you know: ‘Why don’t we just do it? Why don’t we just do a Victorian one?’ Just because we can, really.”

In addition to the 90-minute episode, cinema goers will be treated to exclusive bonus material, including a guided tour of 221B Baker Street from Steven Moffat and a look behind the scenes at how the special episode was made featuring all the lead cast and crew.

The special also acts as a taster for the eagerly-anticipated fourth series, which won’t reach TV screens until 2017, three years after the third aired.
